Myth about books and movies

Movies don't ruin books. If anything, books spoil movies. It's always the movie which comes off second best, disappointing in comparison to our reading experience. The book is resilient.

  1. Exceptions to the rule:

    * Like Water for Chocolate
    * How to Make an American Quilt
    * Sense & Sensibility (arguably; I thought Emma Thompson's script did well to condense bits)
    * V for Vendetta (but that just might be personal preference on my part)

  2. I would probably add "The Devil Wears Prada" too but again, that might be subjective ...

  3. I don't doubt that a movie is very good in different ways to a book and can be an excellent movie. I was just talking about when people complain that a particular movie was terrible, it doesn't actually ruin the book. The book is still good.

    I think P&P 2005 is a good example of differently good. It is beeeautiful. I enjoy it a lot. I think it is good in different ways to the book, although it mistranslates things badly at times, so some people might say it ruins the book (but I say, the book is good notwithstanding).

  4. I love the movie version of Sense & Sensibility, too!

    But I agree. Books are generally way better than movies. I try to read the books first before watching the movies.
