Interesting TV factoid.

Did you know that Smallville (according to my flatmate) is now the longest-running Sci-fi TV show? Smallville! I've never watched an episode, but there it is, still there. I've never met anyone other than flatmate who likes it. But maybe it's good.

  1. You disagree with Kristy? The woman who owns Battlestar Galactica, Stargate etc? I'm with Kristy on this one. And anyway what other genre do superheros belong to? Given that Sci-Fi is usually a broad church which gets slashed together with Fantasy. Sci-Fi/Fantasy makes less sense to me than superman being Sci-Fi. Help us, /Karen/.

  4. sci-fi stands for science fiction which means that it must have some kind of scientific theory at its base.

Smallville is a superman rip off.. comics carry the same nerdy stigma and therefore if you want to categorise things be nerd-dar well I suppose you could classify it as sci-fi/fantasy but basically the story is that he is from another planet and has super powers. It's nothing to do with science.

You could then possibly argue that Spiderman is sci-fi. In that case I would say, yes, Spiderman would be considered as more sci-fi then Superman. Add the hulk and Jackal and Hyde to it, Superman gets trumped on the sci-fi wagon.

  5. Apple: Have you watched Smallville? It can be classified as sci-fi actually - there are a lot of nerdy elements & it's not like Superman at all.

  6. The alien aspect is the main thing that screams sci-fi to me. Scientists are looking for aliens. Just as "scientific" as spiderman's spider bite. /karen/ says there is a thing called Speculative Fiction (SF). It's probably that.
