How to cut onions.

Because of the tears, there are many theories. Wet them, or cut them underwater. Wear goggles. Put a peg on your nose, because it is breathing in the fumes which makes you cry, not exposing your eyeballs to them. The latest one I've heard, which I'm going to try next, is that the fumes are strongest at the root of the onion, so peel and cut them down to the root and then cut the root off LAST.

  1. You shouldn't usually cut the root off first anyway. Cutting them off last makes the onion easier to dice.

  2. That's what Emma T says, but it's not how I do it. I like to get all the rubbish off first.

  3. You are also to put them in the fridge? before you do, that is supposed to help. There's also a cool way to dice it that helps too.

  4. My wife wears goggles. I actually like crying, so I embrace the pain, and let the sorrow flow. The dripping saltiness of tears also works as a sort of man-stock, adding flavour.

    Gross, yet strangely delicious.

  5. Oh, the fridge! I forgot that one. CSIRO should do some control testing.

    Thanks for sharing, Ben.
