Chopsticks

My parents are first generation Chinese migrants, so growing up, I learnt to use chopsticks. I wonder how hard it would have been for me to learn how to use chopsticks, had I grown up not-Asian. I didn't hold them "properly" until I was in Year 6.

So my non-Asian friends, how did you learn to use chopsticks, was it hard to get a hang of, and do you hold them the proper way?

  1. Not sure when I learned - somewhere around uni, I'd say (though there were always chopsticks in the house as long ago as I can remember, we didn't tend to use them). And yes, I think I use them correctly!

  2. I still don't use them the proper way! My anglo husband uses them better than I do :( I think he had a foodie (also white) friend who taught him how.

  3. We got Chinese takeaway for our birthday when I was a kid, and we always got out the special bowls and the chopsticks. However we always went to forks after the first bowl because it's faster to shovel, and you're either quick or hungry. When I started eating out in Sydney and it wasn't such a competitive eating experience, I practiced more. I made a breakthrough: you don't have to pincer with both of them, you just wedge one so it doesn't move and then it's easier to manipulate the top one.

  4. I'm hopeless at holding them correctly. Very non-Asian in that regard. I can't eat rice with chopsticks. I always ask for a spoon at Chinese restaurants & when I have yum cha.

  5. I had the same upbringing as Jess (being sisters) Except that in order to not eat as quickly I used chopsticks to slow down. This was great until I learnt to use chopsticks nearly as well as a fork, then the plan backfired. I have been successfully using chopsticks since I was about 14.
