Kingsford Eat Street Challenge has almost completely stopped being about the food, and has turned into a lovely sort of open family dinner. There were 10 people last Friday, and we only just fitted around one of the big round tables which I love so much. There were 3 new challengers and one of them was a boy — but that didn't cramp our style much. It was probably an enlightening experience for him.
Back to the Chinese Dumpling and Noodle House. They have dumplings, hand made noodles, other noodles, and other food. Who cares, as long as they have dumplings! We ordered mostly dumplings — fried and steamed, and buns. One hand made noodle dish with beef, one token plate of green veg and mushroom, and a shan dong chicken. In my opinion the shan dong was way too sweet and sour, not enough garlic and was overpriced at $15. Everything got eaten very well. It's hard to do dumplings bad. The food comes fast, and there was tea (I'm really getting asian now; there must be tea!). The bill was $8.50 each, which is good value, we thought it would be more. The same food at yum cha would cost 2-3 times that.
Other things to note: Kylie Kwong plugged this place so it must be authentic and yummy. And, there was a noticable higher ratio of anglos to asians than at any other place we've eaten at. Maybe dumplings aren't as good value if you're a student who wants to fill up on rice and ramen, or maybe they aren't as authentic and yummy as the rest of the street food.

Halfway day post.
Sometimes, you just have to wait for the week to be over. Moods will swing back up, looming events will be past, perceptions will change. You just have to wait.
Oh look! Shan Dong chicken :) and it's better already.

KESC 12 - GT Review
There was much anticipation leading up to the Golden Tower challenge of last Friday... the chance to eat at one of our favourite places in Kingsford almost coinciding with a one year anniversary of jelssie. In spite of the floods and storms there were 9 challengers, thanks to everyone who came, regulars and randoms all. Now to the review.
Golden Tower is most notable for its plastic food in the window:
And it's Shan Dong chicken for $7.80:
Enough said. It's a wonderful place.
I wrote some notes but lost them, so this is the gist:
The portion sized are pretty good and they don't "fill" with noodles—there is plenty of meat and veg. Someone said something funny like "if the meal was any bigger it would be eating you". They do chinese food in bento boxes, which is nice. The shan dong was delicious, the pork dish was a little bland maybe, the noodle dishes were enjoyed.
It was crowded and noisy, but that is not unexpected since it is a small room and there were nine of us! There was also a party of oldies.
The service is good, they tried to time our meals the way we requested although there was a mis-communication over how much extra it cost to have tomato rice. I have been accidentally upsold on rice there too on occasion, so be very clear about your rice order.
The value is good, $8-12 meals which are more than enough for one.
Overall, 4.2/5!
Afterwards, at Elsie's pleading, some of us went to Mochi, which does all sorts of waffles including with beef ones, also gelato and tofu pudding. We tried the gelatos and tofu pudding, but were not very impressed. They play movies and music videos though, and maybe the waffles are good, they smelled nice.

KESC Review: Delicious Satay Chinese Restaurant
The name
Is it Delicious Chinese? Or is it Delicious Satay Chinese? There seemed to be no consistency in name.
The vibe
It had a very country town feel to it. I'm not sure why. Maybe the interiors. They played very very old Jacky Cheung songs! I noticed :)
The food

We got our complimentary pre-dinner soup :) At first I was shocked by the small bowl that was given to us. Then I had to remember, there were only four of us, and the reason I'm used to seeing huge bowls of pre-dinner soup is because I'm used to eating out at Chinese restaurants with a large group of people.
The soup had carrot, potato and chicken bone.

Our entrée for the evening was sang choy bow. It was Jess K's idea to order it. The only time of the year I eat sang choy bow is on the first day of Chinese New Year. My family makes it vegetarian, as it's tradition to abstain from meat on that day.
I think Jess G and George had never had it before (am I right?). I take Chinese food for granted, so I was very surprised by that. I think George called it a lettuce taco? Or healthy taco?
Sang choy bow was hot and very tasty. Even the table behind us said in Cantonese, "Oh look! They have sang choy bow here. They're eating sang choy bow". Yes, yes we were.

We ordered honey pepper pork, prawns with vegies and shan dong chicken (the love of Jess G's food life). George found the taste of the honey pepper pork dish a bit unusual. I thought it was a yummy sweet dish (love anything with sugar). I was pleasantly surprised by the number of plump prawns sitting atop the prawn dish (even if were are frozen ones as Jess K claimed). I think the shan dong chicken didn't quite hit the spot for Jess G.

Last but not least, our complimentary post-dinner fruit: rockmelon! It was tasteless sadly. I would have preferred oranges.
Jess G's thoughts
Food was tasty. Came very quickly.
Also reasonable value, dishes were $11-$14, 3 dishes plus entrée was ample for 4 people, and came to $13.50 each. Plus you get rockmelon and soup, tea and water.
They slapped down our rockmelon before were were finished as a hint to get finished with our table!
Is not as crowded as other places, because of space between tables, and has air-con, so while not attractive it is very comfortable.

I was quite happy with it. 3/5
